Setting the Standard: Professional Excellence at Reading Court

by Alan Smith, Reading Court.

Freemasonry has long been associated with care, community, and a quiet commitment to doing things well. Nowhere is this more evident than in the work of the Masonic Housing Association (MHA), where those values are expressed daily through the provision of high-quality sheltered housing accommodation for Freemasons and members of the wider community.

Recent changes across the housing sector have placed a renewed emphasis on professionalism. The Social Housing (Regulation) Act 2023 is raising standards nationwide, with recognised qualifications offered by the Chartered Institute of Housing. The aim is simple but important: to ensure that residents are supported by skilled and knowledgeable professionals operating to the highest standards.

In keeping with its tradition of leading by example, the MHA has moved swiftly to embrace these changes. Across its five houses, managers have already achieved the required qualifications: placing the organisation firmly at the forefront of this new professional landscape.

Scheme Manager Rachel Keenan (Reading Court, Stratford upon Avon) exemplifies this approach. Appointed in November 2024, Rachel has combined the demands of managing a busy scheme of 45 flats with the successful completion of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Level 4 Certificate in Housing Management. The qualification covers a wide range of essential disciplines, including compliance, safeguarding, resident engagement, and effective service delivery. It reflects a level of professional competence that is increasingly vital in today’s regulated housing environment. Rachel commented:

“It has been a challenge to balance the workload with the amount of study and research needed.  I have had to spend time in a quiet room at home at weekends, but it’s been worthwhile. I’ve learnt a lot and can now apply it to what I do”.
